Orangespotted Sunfish are found statewide and most abundant in low gradient, turbid, warm water streams, ponds and impoundments. However, Orangespotted Sunfish can also be found in glacial lakes. They feed on insects and crustaceans. Orangespotted Sunfish have a laterally compressed body with a moderate sized mouth and rounded pectoral fins. The ear flap is flexible with a dark spot outlined in white. Their body is olive-brown in color grading to an orange-red belly. Their sides are heavily spotted with bright orange spots. Spawning coloration turns their head bright blue with lateral orange streaks.
