They feed on insects and crustaceans. Orangespotted Sunfish have a laterally compressed body with a moderate sized mouth and rounded pectoral fins. The ear flap is flexible with a dark spot outlined in white. Their body is olive-brown in color grading to an orange-red belly. Their sides are heavily spotted with bright orange spots. Spawning coloration turns their head bright blue with lateral orange streaks.
