Bluegill are found in cool to warm habitats in shallow vegetated areas of lakes, pounds and impoundments. They are found statewide and feeds on plankton, crustaceans, insects and small fishes. Bluegill have a deep, laterally compressed body with a small mouth and head. The ear flap is black, long and flexible without a light colored margin. Their body is olive to brown on the back grading to a whitish yellow belly with generally faint vertical bars on the body. Mature males can have an intense orange breast. License & Regulations

A valid South Dakota fishing license is required for anglers age 16 and older. Licenses are available for residents, non-residents, and short-term durations (1-day, 3-day, and annual). Purchase online through the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks website or at authorized license retailers throughout the state.
