- Dark olive color on back
- Tan to silver on sides, often with a metallic sheen
- Black stripe along center of each scale row, except toward belly
- Anal fins sometimes dark orange
- Three anal spines
- Dorsal and anal spines long and stout
- Pelvic spine and first two anal spines are pale
