Spain proposes 23 new marine protected areas around the Canary Islands and Mediterranean coasts, amounting to 22,405 km2 focused on seagrass meadows, reefs and submarine canyons, as well as areas supporting cetaceans, marine turtles, seabirds, and other species of conservation interest.
